NORMA PULLIAM OWENS

Norma Pulliam Owens of Raymore, MO, formerly of Camden Point, MO, was born on her parents’ farm near Camden Point, Missouri to Frank and Kitty Clyde (Wallingford) Pulliam. She, being a great teacher, passed into the presence of her Greatest Teacher, Jesus Christ, and her Heavenly Father on November 29, 2006 at 12:15 a.m. dying peacefully at her home of pancreatic cancer at the age of 92 years, 2 months, and 23 days.

Visitation with the family will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 2nd and Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the Camden Point Christian Church. Graveside Services immediately following at the Camden Point Cemetery.

Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John Richard Owens, and her brothers, Edward Wallingford Pulliam and George Robert Pulliam, and sisters, Margaret Lorell Pulliam and Marjorie Irene Bywaters.

She leaves to mourn her passing her son, Richard Bart Owens, of Raymore, MO, daughter, Gail Ann Owens Simmons (Gustavus) of Sandia Park, New Mexico, granddaughter, Lisa Ann Owens Goin, DDS (Rick) of St. Joseph, MO, grandson, John Bart Owens (Dana), of Camden Point, MO, great-grandsons, Tyler Jarrett Goin, Bart Paxton Owens, great-granddaughters, Tess Catherine Owens, Lauren Nicole Owens, and Tara Marie Owens, her former-daughter-in-law, Nadine Owens of Platte City. She leaves her nephew, Robert Pulliam of Kansas City, and nieces, Sue Pulliam of Trenton, MO, and Mimbres, New Mexico, and Jan Bywaters Pero (Mark) of Ocala, Florida and grand-nephew, Thomas Pulliam of Kansas City. She also leaves her daughter-in-law, Betsey Jung Owens, step-daughters, Francesca Brianne WitbolsFeugen Fitzner (James), of Kansas City, and Katrientje Veen WitbolsFeugen of Lee’s Summit, and Teminka Nicole WitbolsFeugen of Shawnee, and was preceded in death by her step-granddaughter, Anastasia Elizabeth WitbolsFeugen.

Mrs. Owens graduated from Camden Point High School in 1932, and attended college at Park University, University of Central Missouri, and graduated from St. Mary’s College, Leavenworth, Kansas. She taught elementary school in North Platte School District for many, many years retiring in 1985. She continued to substitute teach until 1991. She was Beta Sigma Phi’s Woman of the Year for her outstanding service in the North Platte area.

Mrs. Owens was raised in the Baptist Church in Camden Point, and joined the Camden Point Christian Church upon her marriage to John Richard, teaching the adult Sunday School class, and being a faithful member until her death. She read through the Bible “in a Year” many times.

Mrs. Owens loved her flowers, watching birds, and doing the crossword puzzles. She was a staunch Democrat, working at the elections for many years. She was most proud of the fact that she was related to William Jennings Bryan, the great orator, US Secretary of State and 3 time candidate for the United States President who had visited her and her family many times on his speaking trips through Platte County, Missouri. She was not quite so proud to be related to Dan Quayle, former Vice-President of the United States. She was pleased to be able to meet President Clinton and shake his hand on one of his visits to Kansas City.

She was Grand Marshall of the Camden Point Freedom Festival Parade in 1995. She was a member of the Breakfast Bunch in Dearborn, Missouri. She attended the Friendly Seniors Group at the Baptist Church in Camden Point. She was an ardent fan of the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs watching all of their televised games and listening to their radio broadcasted games.

Mrs. Owens moved to Morningview Community, Raymore, MO to be near her son and daughter-in-law in 2003 living in her own home until her death. She easily made friends with the ladies of Morningview Adult Community who visited and called her often.

The family thanks Barbara, Rosa, Jean, and Dan of Odyssey Hospice and Dr. Rene’ Bollier for their loving care.
