Mary Jane (Bonewitz) Pickett
Mary Jane Pickett, 98, of Stewartsville, MO passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014.
She was born on September 3, 1916 to Abner Chacey and Nellie (Bates) Bonewitz in Meriden, Kansas. Mary Jane grew up rural Northeast Kansas and graduated from Topeka High School. She then attended Washburn College. Mary Jane received her Bachelors in Education from Denver University in 1956. She was a teacher in Englewood, Colorado from 1957-1959, and Las Vegas, Nevada High School from 1960-1975
On July 6, 1938 she was united in marriage to Floyd Scritchfield. After their marriage they lived in Topeka and Lawrence Kansas. Her husband, Floyd, preceded her in death in 1971. In 1982 Mary Jane married Lowell B. Pickett, they made their home in Stewartsville. He passed away in 1989.
Mary Jane was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a Professional Women’s Sorority and Beta Sigma Phi-Zeta Chapter, Stewartsville. She was of the Christian faith. She was an active member of National Education Association where she served in a number of positions, including president of the local chapter.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Ethel Edwards and Alice Cathey.
Mary Jane is survived by her two daughters, Nancy Jane Rojas, Austin, TX and Meredith Anne Carter, Stewartsville, MO; grandchildren, Elizabeth Jane Jones, Cedar Park, TX, Kari M. Wass, Colorado Springs, CO, and William Case Lowe, Alexandria, VA; five great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Katelyn, and Kyle Rini and Daniel and Christopher Jones; nephew William Reynolds and sister-in-law Mary Lou Moss.
Memorial Service: 12:00 p.m. (noon) Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Christian Presbyterian Church in Stewartsville.
