Marion Collins Yates
Marion Yates, 80, of Smithville, MO, passed away, Monday, January 26, 2009 at his home.
He was born on January 12, 1929 to Collins Laffoone and Edna (Boydston) Yates in rural Platte County Missouri where grew up. He attended Franklin Grade School and graduated from Smithville High School. Marion then served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge he returned to Smithville.
On March 22, 1953 he was united in marriage to Katherine Renfro. After their marriage they lived in Platte County west of Smithville, and in 1961 they returned to Smithville where they made their home.
Marion worked for the City of Smithville Water Department and Union Carbide in Kansas City.
He was a member of the Smithville United Methodist Church, the Smithville American Legion Post #58, a 57 year member of the Oddfellow’s Lodge 289, and the I.O.O.F. Cemetery Board all in Smithville.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents, infant twin brothers Clyde and Carroll and sister Sue Bywaters.
He is survived by his wife, Katie, of the home; children, Anne Salisbury and husband Randy, Gladstone, MO, Gregg Yates and wife, Mindy, Kansas City, MO, Judy Stone and husband, Rick, Deltona, FL, Vickie Walker and husband, Roger, Woodlawn, IL and Chris Yates and wife, Becky, Sand Springs, OK; grandchildren, Melanie, Natalie, Sara, and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Kimberly, Katie, Rita, Jack, and Grayson; one sister, Sharon Williams, Edgerton, MO, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services: 11:30 a.m. Friday, January 30th at the Smithville United Methodist Church in Smithville. Oddfellows Service at 9:30 a.m. with visitation following until 11:30 a.m. prior to the service.
Burial with Military Honors: Ridgely Cemetery, Ridgely, MO.
Donations: Ridgely Cemetery or the Smithville American Legion.
