Lewis Leonard Smith
Lewis Leonard Smith, 87, of St. Joseph, MO, passed away, Monday, April 30, 2012.
He was born on March 13, 1925 near Hemple, MO and attended Oakdale Grade School and Stewartsville and Gower High Schools. He then served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 41st Division.
On February 24, 1950 he was united in marriage to Kathryn Reva Scott. After their marriage they lived in St. Joseph where they made their home. His wife, Kathryn passed away on October 21, 2005.
Leonard managed Timber Ridge Farms for Dannen Mills in St. Joseph, MO, and worked for Frakes Family Farms in Rushville.
He was a member of the Faith United Church in St. Joseph and the Gower American Legion Post #393. He was also a member of a local horse thief vigilante group. Leonard enjoyed playing poker and Bingo with his friends at Carriage Square.
Leonard was also preceded in death by daughter, Linda Smith, son, James L. Smith, granddaughter, April Reva Evans, his father, Harry Raymond Smith and his mother and step father, Esther Mae (Zysset) and Ora W. “Jack” Pierce and brother, Raymond Smith.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jan and William Evans, St. Joseph, MO, daughter-in-law, Lisa Simanowitz, St. Joseph, MO, three grandchildren, Christine Haley and husband Ben, St. Joseph, MO, Paul Evans and wife Laura, Burlington Junction, MO, Michael J. Smith, St. Joseph, MO; great-grandchildren, Evan and Lydia Haley and Audrey Evans and Baby Evans due in August, brothers, Gerry Smith, Kansas City, MO and Kenneth Smith and wife Pauline, Overland Park, KS; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends including Leonard and Mina McCall.
Funeral Services: Tuesday, May 8, 10:00 am at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Gower, MO.
Burial: Allen Cemetery, Gower.
Visitation: Monday, May 7, 6-8 pm
Donations: Faith United Church, St. Joseph, MO
