Katheryn (Buchanan) Petre

Katheryn (Buchanan) Petre, 90, of Smithville, MO, formerly of Atlanta, MO passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Garden Valley Manor in Kansas City, MO.

She was born on February 25, 1918, in Corder, Missouri, the daughter of James E. and Inez (Kitterman) Buchanan. On November 5, 1939 she was united in marriage to John A. Petre. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary prior to his death on December 12, 2007.

Katheryn is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Hubert Shuler and Janet and Rick George all of Smithville, MO; three grandchildren, Tammy Shuler of Lee‘s Summit, Brad Shuler and wife Jennifer of Shawnee, Kansas, and Kristi Shepard and husband Donny of Lee‘s Summit; and five great-grandchildren, Justin Hoskins and Maverick Shuler of Shawnee, Kansas, Lia Katheryn Spangler, Andrew and Cole Shepard of Lee’s Summit. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Geneta Kay; two brothers, Forest L. Buchanan and Robert “Bob” Buchanan; and three sisters, Verda Holthoff, Edna Black and Marie Froning.

Katheryn lived most of her life in Macon County, Missouri, where she and her husband were engaged in farming east of Atlanta for almost 45 years. Following their retirement from farming, she and John moved to Smithville, Missouri in 1991. Katheryn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Smithville. She was a past member of the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, east of Atlanta. She was also a long time member of the WWW Extension Club. Katheryn especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will long be remembered for her Christian influence, her love of reading, and her home-cooked meals, especially her “famous pies.” She enjoyed cooking and helping in the kitchen with the ladies at the churches where she was a member. She was blessed with a “green thumb” growing beautiful flowers and producing many vegetables in her garden. Katheryn was a devoted mother, “Granny” and friend. She will be greatly missed.

Funeral Service: 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 12th at the First Baptist Church in Smithville with visitation one hour prior to the service.

Graveside Service: 12:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13th at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Redman, MO

Arrangements: Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Smithville.
