Julia May Handley Brouillette
JULIA M. BROUILLETTE
Julia May Handley Brouillette, 93, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Smithville, Mo., passed away, Sunday May 29, 2005 at Truman Medical Centers at Lakewood in Kansas City, Mo.
She was born on January 11, 1912 to Clay and Nellie Deloss (Jenkins) Handley in Canton, Illinois. Julia was the granddaughter of Joseph and Julia Jenkins, the founders of the Jenkins Chair Factory in Smithville. She grew up and attended Northeast High School in Kansas City, and later graduated from Comptometer School.
On August 25, 1934 she was united in marriage to Nelson Parker Brouillette. After their marriage they lived in the Kansas City area where they made their home. Her husband preceded her in death on June 18, 2002.
Julia was a member of the Christian Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Order of Eastern Star Raytown Chapter #97. She took many awards for swimming, diving, ballroom dancing, and was also a former Miss Kansas City. Julia was a co-founder and president of the Kansas City Cowgirls.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, her son, Nelson Handley Brouillette, her sister, Mildred Mitchem, two brothers, Lester and Curtis Handley, and her son-in-law, Jim Stokes.
Julia is survived by one daughter, Bette Stokes, Kansas City, Mo., one grandson, Jonathan D. Stokes, Kansas City, Mo., one granddaughter, Jacquelyn Ross and husband, Scott, Lee?s Summit, Mo., three great-grandchildren, Alexandra, twin boys, Mathew and Benjamin, one niece, Marcia Finley, Wichita, Ks., other relatives and many friends.
Graveside Service: 3:33 p.m. Tuesday, May 31st at Goss Cemetery, Smithville, Mo.
