John A. Petre
John A. Petre, 90, of Smithville, MO, formerly of Atlanta, MO passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 at Garden Valley Manor in Kansas City, MO.
He was born on August 17, 1917 in Redman, MO, the son of Joseph Jess and Georgia Mae (Danner) Petre. On November 15, 1939, he was united in marriage to Katheryn F. Buchanan, who survives. John and Katheryn had recently celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.
John is also survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Hubert Shuler and Janet and Rick George all of Smithville, MO; three grandchildren, Tammy Shuler, Lee’s Summit, Brad Shuler and wife, Jennifer, Shawnee, KS, and Kristi Shepard and husband Donny, Lee’s Summit; five great-grandchildren, Justin Hoskins and Maverick Shuler, Shawnee, KS, and Lia Katheryn Spangler, Andrew and Cole Shepard, Lee’s Summit. Also surviving are three sisters and two brothers; Mary Lyon and Frances Nelson Wait, Macon, MO, Iona Ruth, Riverside, CA, Donnie Petre, Mesa, AZ, and Richard Petre, Wichita, KS, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents, and infant daughter, Geneta Kay and four brothers; George William “Bill” Petre, Woodrow Petre, Eugene “Jimmy” Petre and James “Bunk” Petre and three sisters; Maggie Claudine Petre, Jessie Mae Tipton and Lucille Palmer.
John lived most of his life in Macon County, Missouri and was engaged in farming east of Atlanta for almost 45 years. For many years, John sold Pioneer Seed Corn in that area. Following his retirement from farming, he and Katheryn moved to Smithville, MO in 1991. Enjoying his love for the outdoors, John continued to mow lawns for individuals as well as work in flower gardens or with landscaping. He continued this until the summer and fall of 2006. John was a member and Deacon Emeritus at First Baptist Church in Smithville. He was past member and deacon of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, east of Atlanta, and was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. John was an avid sports fan, attending all local school events in Atlanta, MO and particularly enjoyed the St. Louis Cardinals and MU Tigers. John enjoyed spending time with his family and he loved to visit and “tease” with friends. John will be greatly missed.
Funeral Service: 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 16th at the First Baptist Church in Smithville with visitation from 1:30-3:00 prior to the service.
Graveside Service:2:00p.m. Monday, December 17th at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Redman, MO
Arrangements: Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Smithville.
