In Remembrance Of

Jim Layden

James Michael Layden, 64, of Smithville, MO, passed away on November 9th, after a long battle with cancer, in his home surrounded by loved ones. Jim will be remembered for his unwavering strength, kindness, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him.

He was born on December 27, 1959, to James E. and Mary Lou (Weik) Layden in Independence, MO, where he grew up and graduated from William Chrisman High School. Jim was a talented athlete during his school years, excelling particularly in football, earning the respect and admiration of teammates and classmates alike.

On November 24, 1989, he married the love of his life, Patricia Jean Lash. Their marriage was the epitome of the phrase, “Home is where the heart is.” Whether they were in their first home in Blue Springs or their later homes filled with friends and memories, Jim and Patty made every place special with their love and hospitality. They were preparing to celebrate 35 years of marriage, a testament to their deep and abiding partnership.

Jim was a skilled glazier who eventually purchased and managed two successful glass shops in the Kansas City area, earning a reputation for both quality and integrity in his work. His commitment to his trade left a lasting mark on the community and those he worked with.
Jim’s interests and hobbies reflected his zest for life. He was an enthusiastic mushroom hunter, delighted by the thrill of finding the first or biggest “roonie” of the season. Golfing brought him joy and camaraderie, especially when played with friends on sunny days. Fishing was a peaceful retreat for him, where he found solace and the beauty of nature. He was also a skilled pool player, known for his competitive spirit and good humor at the table.

Above all, Jim was a devoted family man who cherished his role as a husband, father, and Papa. He was the heart of family gatherings, known for his stories, laughter, and unwavering support. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he took immense pride in watching them grow and thrive.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Lou Layden.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Patty Layden; children Jeremy (Ashley) Layden, Jonathon (Carlota) Layden, Jeffery (Brandon Magee) Clouse, and Jennifer (Gary) Panethiere; six grandchildren, Trevor, Brooke, Cole, Penelope, Charlotte, and Jonathon; sisters Beverly Shephard and Debbie Layden; and many extended family members and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

Jim’s legacy of love, kindness, and strength will continue to inspire those who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

The family will host a Celebration of Life at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, November 19th at FOE (Eagles Club) 11424 E 24 Hwy Sugar Creek, MO 64054.
