In Remembrance Of

Hiliario Eduardo Ferrer

Hilario Edwardo “Papi” Ferrer was born on January 14, 1922 to Francisca and Eduardo in Camaguay, Cuba.  He had one brother, Carlos, with whom he was close.  “Eduardo,” as he was known, attended high school in Jamaica, where he learned English.  He graduated from the University of Havana and went on to become a dentist.

Eduardo came to the United States in 1954, followed shortly after by his wife Rosa, and children Martha and Edwardo, in 1959.  They settled in Brooklyn, NY where they stayed for 7 years.  In 1966, Edwardo and his family re-located to Union City, NJ where he would live for over 40 years.  During this time, Edwardo attended the University of Buffalo in upstate New York so that he could practice dentistry in the U.S.

Eduardo was an avid photographer.  He could often be found in the dark room he fashioned out of a spare closet, meticulously pouring over his work.  In pursuit of the perfect shot, he traveled across the United States and the world, always returning with photos and stories to share.  He belonged to the local camera club, where he won numerous awards and had his work exhibited regularly over the years.

Ever the comedian, Eduardo was always cracking jokes, often reducing himself and everyone else to tears of laughter in the process.  He will be remembered with a pipe or cigar in his mouth and his favorite hat on his head while listening to country and jazz with a smile on his face.  Eduardo left this life on the evening of May 26, 2014 in Smithville, MO.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rosa Lydia Ferrer and his brother Carlos Ferrer.

Eduardo is survived by his wife Maria Pinzon of Smithville, MO and her children Javier, Erin, and Ivan Pinzon and her grandchildren.  He is also survived by his son Eduardo M. Ferrer and  wife Pauline of Union City, NJ; and his grandchildren Caitlin and Daniel, niece Julia B and husband William Arcadipane and her son Salvador B., as well as his daughter Martha F. Gawchick and her husband Bill of Bogota, NJ.
