Henry Jackson Devers
Jackson Devers, 88, of Smithville, MO, passed away Friday, April 2, 2010.
Henry Jackson Devers was born on September 9, 1921 to William Oscar and Margaret Elizabeth (Cox) Devers in Walnut, KS. Jackson grew up in Smithville and in 1940 graduated from Smithville High School. He then served his country in the US Navy from July 1942 to December 1945 during WWII. After his honorable discharge he returned to Smithville.
On April 7, 1946 he was united in marriage to Ada Jane Lowman. After their marriage they live in the neighboring communities and eventually settled in Smithville.
Jackson was a livestock trader. He also operated the local feed store, started the trash service in Smithville, was the farm manager for Kindred’s, the owner/leaser of the Co-op Service Station in Smithville, the manager of the Co-op Service Station in Plattsburg, retiring on January 1, 1987. After his retirement, he opened Devers’ Tires in Smithville and later worked for the Clay County Parks Department.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #58 in Smithville and Boots and Bows Square Dancing. Jackson enjoyed trading and wasn’t one to just sit around.
Jackson was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Guy Devers and Paul Devers; three sisters, Mary Ellen Devers, Geraldine Prickett, and Loraine Boyd.
He is survived by his wife, Ada, of the home; son, Archie Devers and wife, Martha, Smithville; daughters, Rebecca Zellner, Charleston, SC, and Susan Main and husband, Greg, Smithville, MO; five grandchildren, Kelly Devers and wife, Dee, Chad Cockriel, Amy Hyatt and husband, Josh, Kari Carr and husband, Steve, and Erik Wade; seven great-grandchildren, Samara, Hannah, Kara, Quintin, Keenan, Kiefer and Olivia; sister Louise Pherigo, Smithville, MO; several nieces and nephews other relatives and many friends.
Visitation: 6:30-9:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 7th at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home, Smithville.
Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
