Gloria L (Crimmins) Slayton

 

Gloria Lavelle Crimmins Slayton was born April 11, 1940 to Vera Naomi Curtis and John Henry Crimmins in Kansas City Kansas and died Saturday, December 14, 2013 in her home in Lamoni, Iowa.

 

She graduated from Wyandotte High School, Kansas City Kansas Junior College, attended the University of Kansas and graduated from Graceland University in 1986 with a degree in International Relations.

 

In 1964 she married William J (Jerry) Slayton who she had met while attending the University of Kansas.  They moved to Houston, Texas where they had two sons, John Slayton and Paul D Slayton.  Upon Jerry’s graduation from Rice University in 1969 they moved to Lamoni, Iowa where Jerry taught at Graceland University until his retirement and death in 2003.

 

Gloria enjoyed art and nature and participated in the National Wildlife Federation’s Backyard Wildlife Habitat Program.  She also loved her children  John and Jeanie Slayton, Independence Missouri / Lamoni Iowa; and Paul D and Gina Slayton, Tacoma, Washington; and grandchildren Heather L Slayton of Honolulu, Hawaii; John E Slayton of Des Moines, Iowa;  Christian W Slayton of Independence, Missouri;  Samuel C Slayton of Rancho Cucamonga, California;  Sarah M Slayton,  Rachel M Slayton and Rebekah M Slayton of Lamoni Iowa; and  Hannah Slayton of Tacoma. Washington; her step-brother Don E Crimmins (deceased January 21, 2013); niece Sandi Lujan of Livermore, California; nephew John D Crimmins of San Francisco, California; as well as her sister, Carol L Crimmins Smith of Parkville, Missouri.

 

In recent years caregivers Jennifer Baldwin, Neva Bixby, Heather Edwards, Kim and Cindy Wilson and Penny Worthington as well as Hospice providers have become part of her family.

 

A memorial service to celebrate Gloria’s life will be held at The Community of Christ Church in Lamoni, Iowa, Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 7 pm.  Cremation and graveside services will be held by her family at Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence, Missouri on Wednesday at 1:00 pm, December 18, 2013.

 

The Hixson-Klein Funeral Home of Smithville, Missouri was in charge of arrangements.
