George Edward Guyer

George Edward Guyer, 86, of Edgerton, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2011 surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife Mary and three children, Janice King and husband Darwin of Smithville, MO, Randy Guyer and wife, Mona of Emporia KS, and Mike Guyer and wife Shelly of Holt MO. He also leaves behind 7 grand children, Chris, DJ, Aaron, Caleb, Ginny, Lauren and Casey, 7 great grand children and one brother John Guyer of Edgerton, MO.

Born August 31, 1925 in Osceloa KS to parents John and Ruth Guyer, George grew up in Edgerton Mo. At the age of 16, he left home and shortly thereafter joined the United States Marines. While in the service he fought in some of the fiercest battles of the second World War against the Japanese. While in the Marines he earned a Presidential Unit Citation, a South Pacific Campaign Medal and the Purple Heart with one star. Upon discharge he returned home to Edgerton.

A lifelong railroad locomotive engineer, he worked for the Kansas City Terminal Railway Company and later the Chicago Northwestern Railway company. During his working years he was active in the community by serving as city water commissioner, city alderman, and mayor. He was active in the local American Legion post, #445.

During retirement George and Mary enjoyed extended winter vacations in La Feria Texas, where they owned a winter home. They made many good friends and always looked forward to missing the Midwest winters. George was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Donnie Guyer.

A caring and patient teacher and family patriarch, he will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A visitation has been arranged for 6:30-8:00 p.m. October 13th at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home in Edgerton, MO.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on October 14th at the funeral home.

Inurnment will be at Ridgely Cemetery.

Donations may be made to Northcare Hospice.
