In Remembrance Of

Geneva “Genie” Maxwell

Geneva (Rule) Maxwell, 73 of Platte City, MO, formerly of Smithville, MO passed away Wednesday July 11, 2007 at her home in Platte City.

Geneva “Genie” Maxwell, daughter of Bud and Mary (Bruce) Rule was born on November 1, 1933 in Kansas City, MO into a family of 2 sisters and 4 pesky brothers. She was a very active and well-liked student at Smithville High School making many lifelong friends. Upon graduation, she was awarded a full scholarship from Dr. Arch Spellman to nurses training at RLDS Independence Sanitarium and Hospital and began her career as a surgical scrub nurse.

There were two major loves in her life, her family and Spellman Hospital.

She was a dedicated nurse at Spellman Memorial Hospital in Smithville, Platte Medical Clinic in Platte City, Platte City Schools and St. Lukes Hospital, Kansas City.

At a welcome home party at The Red Crown, Genie broke her date of the evening and took a fancy to the party’s guest of honor, Bob Maxwell. They later married on November 26, 1955 and moved to Maryville, MO. where daughter, Julie was born. They moved to Platte City in 1958 becoming lifelong residents. In 1961, Genie became a pioneer at both home birthing techniques and husband resuscitation as evidenced by Todd’s birth at home on the bathroom floor. A low-point in her life was the tragic death of infant son, Scott Wilson Maxwell in 1963.

For many years Genie was a professional and caring nurse as well as the wife of an all consumed football coach. Her life revolved around work and her children.

As her children married she embraced her new son and daughter and especially loved her role as grandmother, “Mugga/Muggie” to Katy, Scott, Nick and Derek.

Genie retired from nursing in 1996 and was able to enjoy her time at home doing crossword puzzles, jumbles and watching her favorite shows. Daily entertainment was always provided by “The Three Stooges” Bob, Dallas and Toni.

Her heroic battle against a merciless disease proved her tenacity, will and spirit. She served as a remarkable example to those who loved her.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, Platte City, MO; daughter, Julie and husband Rick Morgan, OFallon, MO; son Todd and wife Melonie Maxwell, Platte City, MO; three brothers, Tom Rule and wife, Beverly, Gladstone, MO; Kenneth and Larry Rule, both of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Katy and Scott Morgan, Nick and Derek Maxwell; brothers-in-law and their families.
