In Remembrance Of

Emily Claudine (Johnson) Carlson

Emily Claudine Carlson was a lifetime resident of Kansas City. She was born to Claude and Emma (Skupa) Johnson on February 20, 1924 and died at age 86 on January 31, 2011.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Harold J. Carlson from Flandreau, SD whom she met at a dance at the end of World War II. During the war she worked in a war-related industry and volunteered at the USO. Emily and Harold had a brief residency in Butte, Montana before returning home to Kansas City. They raised their family in Johnson County, Kansas and then retired to Clay County, MO in 1980.

Also surviving her are son Keith Donald and his wife Chris of Tonganoxie, KS and their children Chase and Jessica; daughter Cindy K. Brown and her husband David of Platte City, MO and their children April and Tyler; and daughter Patricia Ann Carlson. Daughter Sylvia Marie (Sunny) Seibert preceded her in death. Sunny’s husband, Roger and their children, Kimberly and husband John Edwards and Rebecca and husband Ryan Graciano also survive her.

Emily took great pride in her children and grandchildren. She was a homemaker and mother and believed that raising children was a high calling. She was always involved in their PTA, Scouting, athletic and music programs. She was an accomplished cook and pie-maker and enjoyed trying new recipes until her progressing heart disease made cooking difficult. She was a regular bridge player and also enjoyed reading and visiting her family and friends.

During her last illness she was being rehabilitated at a skilled nursing facility in Smithville, MO. Another patient began praying with her and she committed her life to Christ. Her last days were peaceful and she has gone to heaven.

A celebration of her life and the blessing of salvation will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Edgerton, MO at 11:00 AM on Saturday, Feb. 5th.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Salvation Army.
