Eleanor J. (Benton) Ray
Eleanor Jean Ray, 88, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Thursday, December 23, 2010.
She was born on September 22, 1922 to Ray L. and Nora Alice (Poage) Benton in Gower, MO where she grew up and graduated from Gower High School. Eleanor later graduated from Platte Business School in St. Joseph, MO.
On September 18, 1948 she was united in marriage to Alvin V. Ray. After their marriage they lived in St. Joseph where they made their home. Her husband Alvin, passed away June 8, 1978. Eleanor continued to live in south St. Joseph.
Eleanor retired from E&L Wholesale Liquor Company in St. Joseph. She was a member of Hyde Valley United Methodist Church, and she served as a member of the Church Women United. She was also a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and was a 50 year member of the Girl Scouts of America. Eleanor was a seamstress, quilter and enjoyed cake decorating and bowling.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Charlotte Benton, great-granddaughter, Rose Mary McCann, and niece Gwen Lukens.
Eleanor is survived by two daughters, Dr. Alice Jean Hixson and husband Stan, Fayetteville, GA, and Barbara Ellison and husband Jim, Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Doug Ellison and wife Heather, Hanston, KS, Polly McCann and husband Brian, Kansas City, MO, Alyssa Violett, Kansas City, MO, Jay Hixson, Alexandria, VA, Andrea Sisk and husband Ryan, St. Joseph, MO, Christa Hixson and fiancé Chreston Miller, Blacksburg, VA, and Michael Hixson, Lexington, VA; great-grandchildren, Kaitlynn, Eliza, Quinn, Meg, Sophie, Lillie, Emma, Gabe, Benjamin and Ellen; sister-in-law Zilla Mary Benton; several nieces and nephews including, Denise Benton and Rebecca Benton, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 28th at the Hixson-Klein Funeral Home.
Burial: Mt. Zion Cemetery
Visitation: 6:00-8:00 Monday December 27th at the funeral home.
Donations: Alzheimer Association
