Edna Jean Williams

Edna Jean Williams, 88, St. Joseph, Missouri, formerly of Diamond City, Arkansas, died Friday, January 25, 2013, at the Gower Convalescent Center.   Edna was born June 15, 1924 in St. Joseph.

Edna was preceded in death by her beloved companion of 45 years, Bill McLarney; her parents, Abner and Clara Cargill; siblings: Herschel Cargill, Myrtle Rogers, Gladys Reinstra, and Ethel Cargill. She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Edna attended grade school in Tarkio, Missouri and Benton High School in St. Joseph. Edna managed the Hawkins Cafe in St. Joseph for sixteen years. She helped operate First and Last Chance Tavern in St. Joseph from 1978 until 1984. Edna moved to Diamond City, Arkansas on Bull Shoals Lake in 1984 and was active in her community while working part-time. She returned to St. Joseph in December of 2011.

A skilled cook, Edna created feasts served to tavern customers, fishing club friends, and family. An avid bingo and card player¸ she organized groups to play together. She was “first in and last out” of family games, never caring if she won or lost. She was skilled at fishing. Edna was an artisan who created beautiful needlework, ceramic pieces, crocheted afghans, and oil paintings. Edna and Bill visited Ireland, and on numerous occasions traveled to Florida and Arizona in their motor home.

Known for her outgoing personality, boldness, and lively spirit, Edna brought smiles to those she met. She loved and truly cared for everybody, regardless of their differences. She was an instigator of fun and a “giver” with a loving heart.

Visitation at 11:30 a.m. will be followed by a memorial service at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Hixson-Klein Funeral Home in Gower, Missouri.
