Dr. W. Powell Keeney

Dr. W. Powell Keeney, 81, of Smithville, MO passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 after a lengthy illness.

He was born on December 19, 1931 to Rev. Winfred L and Virginia A. (Gibson) Keeney in St. Louis, MO. He attended school and grew up in Chaffee, MO where he graduated from High School. During high school he played baseball, basketball and football and was chosen for the all-around best athlete award. Powell later received a provisional contract to play baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals. His baseball career was cut short as he served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Powell received his Bachelor’s Degree from William Jewell College, his Master’s Degree at Central Theological Seminary and his Doctorate Degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary.

Rev. Keeney served as pastor for the Faucett Baptist Church, the First Baptist Church in Smithville and later at the South Broadlawn Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Keeney later served as director of the Mental Health Department at Lakeside Hospital. He was founder of the Plaza Counseling Center and also the Substance Abuse Program at Mid Continent Psychiatric Hospital all in Kansas City. While living in Paducah, KY, he developed substance abuse programs for Common Wealth Inc. of Kentucky and Massac County Mental Health of Metropolis, IL. For his help and research in mental health, the Treatment Center in Illinois was named in his honor.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Janice Weneck.

He is survived by his wife Joan of the home; son Dr. Brad Keeney and wife Dr. Hillary Keeney; grandsons, Jason Andrew Sukut and wife Sherry and Scott Powell Keeney; great-grandson, Connor Sukut; three step children, Tom Ink and wife Janet, John Ink and wife Carolyn and Kelly Wataha and husband Jeff; step grandchildren, John Jr., Tyler, Zachary, and Connor; other relatives and many friends.

Memorial Service: 6:30 p.m. Wednesday January 16th at the First Baptist Church, Smithville with visitation following.
