Barbara Joan Scales

Barbara Joan Scales, beloved Aunt to the entire family, passed away January 3rd, 2017. 

She was born on January 26th, 1929 to Eldon Artie and Cornelia Fay (Shannon) Murphy near Smithville, Missouri.  She grew up in Ferrelview and graduated from Smithville High School.

On August 27th, 1960 she was united in marriage to Jack D. Scales.  After their marriage they lived in Ferrelview, MO, Texas, California and Tennessee and in 1986 they returned to Smithville where they made their home.  Her husband Jack, preceded her in death on July 10, 1993.

Upon Jack’s retirement they came home to Smithville, where they served as Elders and Deacons at the Smithville First Christian Church.  Barbara also became the Church secretary, a position she loved and cherished for many years. 

Barbara is survived by a step-daughter, Erin Amanda Hemenway, Palm Springs, California; sister, Marilyn M. Morton and husband, David W. “Bud” of Smithville, MO; niece, Stephanie Henson and husband Brad, Smithville; niece, Tiernie Darr and husband James, Smithville; great nephews, Jeromy Darr and wife Ashley, Smithville and Jonathan Darr and wife Amy, Platte City; great niece, Mackenzie Messina and husband Nick, Liberty; great-great nieces and nephews, Charley and Paisley Darr and Greyson and Christian Messina.

Barb had the capacity for loving everyone, most of all her Lord.  She will be greatly missed.  The family would like to thank Gower Convalescent Center for their excellent care.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the First Christian Church, Smithville, Missouri.

Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 5th at First Christian Church in Smithville, MO with visitation at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service.

Burial Smithville Memorial Cemetery

Donations may be made to the church.

    Barbara was such a special lady. She devoted so many hours to our church and did a wonderful job. She was always cheerful and patient, May she rest in peace.I regret that I was unable to attend her service.
